Supporting emotionally sustainable SEND leadership through reflective practice and schema modes.

What is Modewise Supervision?

Logo S&IC.PNG

Many SENCOs work under relentless pressure — balancing complex pupil needs, parental anxiety, staff wellbeing, statutory processes and whole-school accountability.

Modewise supervision groups provide a structured, supportive space for SENCOs to reflect, regulate and lead more effectively.

Using the concept of Schema Modes, SENCOs explore how stress can shift us into different emotional states such as:

• Vulnerable Child
• Angry Child
• Perfectionist Over-Controller
• Punitive Critic
• Detached Protector
• Healthy Adult

Participants develop greater awareness of:

  • their own responses under pressure

  • emotionally charged professional dynamics

  • parental anxiety and conflict

  • emotionally sustainable leadership approaches

The focus is practical, reflective and professionally grounded.

Who is this for?
  • School SENCOs

  • Trust SEND networks

  • Inclusion leaders

  • Assistant SENCOs

  • New-to-role SENCOs

Why Schema Modes in Education?

Modewise draws on established schema therapy concepts that help individuals recognise emotional patterns under stress. In school leadership contexts, this translates into clearer thinking, calmer responses and more sustainable professional relationships.

Professional Endorsement

Chris has a remarkable ability to bring schema modes and mode understanding to life in a way that feels both deeply relatable and immediately applicable for education providers and inclusion leads. His programme helps professionals understand not only the behaviours and needs of the young people they support, but also how their own modes and emotional responses influence leadership, relationships, and regulation within systems.

What stands out most is Chris’s skill in creating a learning environment that is both stretching and safe. He challenges practice thoughtfully and skilfully, encouraging genuine reflection and growth without ever becoming critical or shaming. Participants feel supported to think differently, develop greater self-awareness, and lead others with more confidence, compassion, and emotional attunement.

Chris combines warmth, insight, and practical expertise in a way that leaves a lasting impact on both individuals and organisations.

I fully support this work as a meaningful contribution to emotionally informed leadership in schools.
